A beautifully preserved issue of the London Gazette. March 19,1736.

The London Gazette is the largest continuously published newspaper in the world. it began in 1664 and continues today in pretty much the same format.

There is a tax stamp in the lower right hand corner. Taxes on printed materials were common in England but 1765 the Stamp Act impossed those taxes on the American colonies, causing a mighty uproar. It was the first internal tax on America and was designed to help pay to protect the western frontier.

This lead to the creation of a famous slogan - "No taxation without representation."
